The industrialisation of quantum computing requires not only basic technology, but also a functioning market, says Dr. Andre Luckow, Head of the Department for New Technologies at BMW Group IT. In this interview, he explains how QUTAC intends to strengthen the development of industrial applications and how the BMW Group, both within the consortium and beyond, is involved in the field of quantum computing.<\/h4>\n

Dr. Luckow,\u00a0the\u00a0European\u00a0Quantum Technologies Flagship\u00a0consists of more than\u00a020\u00a0projects.\u00a0An\u00a0industrial consortium already exists\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0associated\u00a0Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC).\u00a0Does it even need\u00a0QUTAC?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0variety of initiatives\u00a0only proves\u00a0the\u00a0enormous potential\u00a0of this\u00a0technology\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0the need to establish\u00a0viable partnerships. QUTAC\u00a0wishes to strengthen the\u00a0position\u00a0of the German economy in quantum\u00a0computing. We do, of course,\u00a0also\u00a0see the need for cooperation at a European\u00a0level.\u00a0QuIC has\u00a0a broad focus\u00a0and\u00a0unites\u00a0the entire spectrum,\u00a0from\u00a0major business enterprises\u00a0to\u00a0medium-sized\u00a0companies,\u00a0start-ups,\u00a0and\u00a0research institutes. QUTAC\u00a0concentrates its attention on Germany and on\u00a0the field of\u00a0industrial application.\u00a0We\u00a0are confident that we\u00a0will\u00a0supplement the work of\u00a0QuIC\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0initiatives\u00a0in a meaningful way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is\u00a0it\u00a0so\u00a0important\u00a0for\u00a0Europe\u00a0to\u00a0focus\u00a0on\u00a0specific industrial applications?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We must understand the topic of quantum computing holistically. Its industrialisation not only requires the technology, but a market as well. Thus, we need to develop applications that offer specific advantages to businesses. Only markets make the development of quantum solutions economically attractive. Germany and Europe not only have top-level research, but also strong industries that offer promising fields of application for quantum computing, such as mechanical engineering, production, and logistics, materials research and risk management. Now we have to combine the two and create an ecosystem that utilises German and European strengths.<\/span><\/p>\n

How\u00a0exactly\u00a0do\u00a0the members of\u00a0QUTAC\u00a0cooperate?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the members of\u00a0QUTAC\u00a0are cooperating in working groups\u00a0from\u00a0materials research,\u00a0production\u00a0and\u00a0logistics, as well as engineering\u00a0and\u00a0design, on the development of several applications.\u00a0The\u00a0BMW Group\u00a0is heading the working group\u00a0on\u00a0production\u00a0and\u00a0logistics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which application cases is the\u00a0BMW Group\u00a0contributing to?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two specific\u00a0cases. First, we are devoting ourselves to robot\u00a0program\u00a0planning.\u00a0In our plants,\u00a0we employ\u00a0thousands of industrial\u00a0robots in production\u00a0and\u00a0logistics\u00a0every day. The planning of\u00a0robot\u00a0sequences\u00a0is\u00a0complex\u00a0and ideal for\u00a0computer-supported\u00a0optimisation and\u00a0design\u00a0techniques.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Second, we are\u00a0working\u00a0on the optimisation of vehicle\u00a0equipment\u00a0for the configuration\u00a0of test\u00a0vehicles.\u00a0With the aid\u00a0of quantum\u00a0computing, we intend to minimise the\u00a0number\u00a0of test\u00a0vehicles required and at the same time guarantee a one hundred percent test\u00a0coverage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to developing\u00a0applications,\u00a0QUTAC\u00a0intends to\u00a0inform and advise\u00a0funding\u00a0processes.\u00a0How does the\u00a0consortium evaluate the\u00a0funding\u00a0landscape\u00a0in\u00a0Germany today?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Germany has considerably\u00a0extended\u00a0its\u00a0funding of quantum\u00a0computing. The Federation and the\u00a0States\u00a0support basic research and the development of hard-\u00a0and\u00a0software. Different qubit technologies are to be developed in several hubs, for example. The\u00a0volume\u00a0of\u00a0this\u00a0funding is\u00a0remarkable\u00a0and\u00a0something of which we\u00a0should all be proud. At the same time,\u00a0we also note that the focus\u00a0is currently\u00a0on developing\u00a0hardware, whilst software\u00a0and\u00a0applications are\u00a0considered less important. But these\u00a0are the\u00a0aspects\u00a0that offer the greatest economic potential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does\u00a0QUTAC\u00a0plan\u00a0to involve itself\u00a0in\u00a0funding processes?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

QUTAC\u00a0does\u00a0not\u00a0intend to receive\u00a0any funding itself. However, we\u00a0hope to inform and help to direct the allocation of funding to\u00a0those\u00a0avenues\u00a0that promise the\u00a0greatest commercial\u00a0value-added\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0thus, in\u00a0the long term, the greatest\u00a0contribution\u00a0to our society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the aims of QUTAC is the creation of a quantum computing ecosystem in Germany and Europe. Why does such a network help to emerge?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The creation of ecosystems is, generally speaking, a major challenge and requires stamina. It is a matter of\u00a0gathering\u00a0together various\u00a0participants\u00a0from industry,\u00a0science and politics.\u00a0That\u2019s why we need\u00a0a\u00a0dual\u00a0approach. On the\u00a0one\u00a0hand:\u00a0A\u00a0top-down\u00a0approach to set up major\u00a0projects, as the Federation and the States are doing at the moment.\u00a0On the other\u00a0hand:\u00a0Decentralised efforts to\u00a0awake the\u00a0keenness\u00a0of innovative\u00a0and\u00a0creative\u00a0minds\u00a0to enrich this ecosystem\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0ideas.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which factors will be crucial for\u00a0the\u00a0successful\u00a0industrialisation of quantum computing\u00a0in the future?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the increasing maturity of the technology and\u00a0the realisation of\u00a0industry\u00a0applications, the need for expert personnel will increase, too.\u00a0Thus, we need to think about the\u00a0qualifications\u00a0and further training of our employees today.\u00a0In particular,\u00a0we will\u00a0require\u00a0people with\u00a0interdisciplinary\u00a0skills\u00a0at the touchpoints of\u00a0physics,\u00a0electrical engineering,\u00a0and\u00a0computer science.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How is the\u00a0BMW Group\u00a0involved in the field of quantum computing apart from\u00a0QUTAC?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0have launched\u00a0several\u00a0different initiatives\u00a0in this field. In the context of our\u00a0<\/span>Quantum Computing Challenge<\/span><\/a>\u00a0we are currently inviting the global\u00a0quantum\u00a0computing\u00a0community\u00a0to\u00a0submit\u00a0solutions\u00a0for\u00a0specific challenges\u00a0that are typical\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0automobile\u00a0industry and\u00a0range\u00a0from the\u00a0positioning\u00a0of sensors in\u00a0automated\u00a0vehicles\u00a0to the configuration of test\u00a0vehicles.\u00a0The\u00a0winners\u00a0will\u00a0be given the opportunity to continue\u00a0working\u00a0with us on these\u00a0projects and bring them, if\u00a0possible, to a successful conclusion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the function\u00a0of\u00a0the new\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Chair of quantum algorithms and applications<\/span><\/b><\/a>, which the\u00a0BMW Group\u00a0has funded at\u00a0the Technical\u00a0University\u00a0of Munich\u00a0(TUM)?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We wish, above all, to build a bridge between\u00a0basic\u00a0research and industrial\u00a0application\u00a0through our funding. The\u00a0Chair\u00a0should\u00a0conduct\u00a0application-oriented research\u00a0on\u00a0specific\u00a0problems and\u00a0questions in quantum\u00a0computing\u00a0and establish a constant transfer of knowledge and insights.
